Prader Willi Syndrome

New Directions are to appear on Sky TV in July/August this year. A film crew desended on Bishops Corner on Monday 15th June. Narinder Sharma, Chief Executive of the Prader Willi Syndrome Association, came to Hastings to be interviewed for the production which is about  Residential Care Homes. We are the only provider of services to persons with PWS that will be featured in the programe.

In other news Sanchia Lowe the Manager of Bishops Corner is going to run in next years London Marathon for the PWSA. We are planning a number of fundraising events from now until she runs. Bishops Corner is 10 years old in  April 2010. Sanchia will run the marathon in April 2010.

Joan Davies has been appointed the new manager of Bishops Croft as of the 14th September 2009.

AT NEW DIRECTIONS WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WORK OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR GUYS. IT GIVES THEM A GREATER FEELING OF SELF WORTH.

 

IN APRIL THIS YEAR A CHANCE CONVERSATION BETWEEN DAVID PALMER AND NICKY AN EMPLOYEE OF DVS LTD PROVIDER OF SERVICES TO NEWSPAPER AND PUBLISHING INDUSTRIES. NICKY ARRANGED A MEETING WITH RICHARD CUFF FROM DVS TO DISCUSS THE POSSIBILITY OF WORK PLACEMENTS. THE RESULT WAS FIVE DAYS PER WEEK WORKING IN THIS BUSY OFFICE ENVIRONMENT. EIGHT RESIDENTS FROM THREE OF THE FOUR NEW DIRECTIONS HOMES GO TO WORK AT DVS.

 

STAFF AT DVS HAD A MUFTY DAY WHERE THEY DONATED MONEY INTO A COLLECTION BOX. WITH FULL PROCEEDS TO BE SENT TO PWSA.

WORK OPPORTUNITIES CAN BE HARD TO FIND AND INDIVIDUAL APPLICATIONS FROM OUR GUYS ARE OFTEN UNSUCCESSFULL OR DO NOT EVEN GET A RESPONCE. WE HAVE THREE PERSONS WORKING IN DIFFERENT CHARITY SHOPS TWO WORKING DIFFERENT DAYS AT A LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOL RECEPTION CLASS, ONE WORKING AT A LOCAL SOLICITORS OFFICE. TWO OF THE GUYS WORK AT HORTICULTURAL PROJECT RUN BY A CHARITABLE TRUST. ALL OF THESE WORK PLACEMENTS OUR GUYS ATTEND WITHOUT STAFF SUPPORT FROM NEW DIRECTIONS AND ARE PROVING VERY SUCCESSFULL.

Bishops Way recently underwent its first CSCI/CQC inspection, which will shortly be available for perusal on the CSCI/CQC website. A hard copy is also available at the house for all to read.  We were given a thorough and complete audit of all of the standards, as is usual practice for a new home, and came out well on most things.  Unfortunately, some of the paperwork was not up to speed which prompted the inspector to give us an overall rating of ‘adequate’.  We are all disappointed with this, as we all know that Bishops Way is certainly more than an adequate service.  It has been a hectic time since we opened, we have had a lot happening in a relatively short space of time.  All I can say as the manager is that I stand by my decision to prioritise getting the service users settled and the staff team working well.  Now that these are in place, I will devote more of my time to the administrative side of things.  I promise that all of us here at New Directions will not rest until we have improved our rating to a ‘good’ at the very least.
