Welcome

Welcome to praderwillisyndrome.org.uk, your source of information for parents and healthcare professionals working with people with Prader-Willi Syndrome.

Who We Are

New Directions is a specialist provider for adults with Prader-Willi Syndrome. New Directions currently runs four residential services, one of which was opened on 1st September this year.

We are specialist homes and do not cater for residents who do not have the syndrome,  All homes are small in size and cater for seven, eight, six and four residents respectively.

All service users have individual care plans with goals and targets. There are integrated day services, some of which are on-site others in the community but supported by the home staff. Staff training is of paramount importance, and regular sessions are held covering all aspects of care including training in the syndrome.

The first specialist home was opened in September 1998. New Directions currently runs four residential services, the latest of which was opened on 1st September 2008.

In February 2009, a semi independent Villa was opened in the grounds of our home, Bishops Croft, in Robertsbridge. Necessary renovations on the Villa were funded by a donation from Discovery, the London fitness courses provider. The Villa is separate from the main house, but only a couple of steps away and is fully supported by the trained staff in the home.

All service users have individual care plans with goals and targets and we are working toward greater personalisation and person centred approaches.

There are integrated day services at each venue, some of the activities are on-site, others in the community but supported by the home staff. We have a commitment to giving as many opportunities as possible to the service users, and have managed to secure a high number of work experience placements.

Staff training is of paramount importance, and regular sessions are held covering all aspects of care including training in the syndrome. In 2009, New Directions opened a new training room to accommodate the training requirements of our large staff team, which is now 75 in number.

Testimonials

We have had recommendations and praise for our care standards and, over the next few months, will be publishing on this web-site some quotes and names received from feedback given.

Letter 7/6/11
Dear David,
We’ve been meaning to write this letter for ages but, after watching the recent Panorama programme (can’t describe to you in words how we felt, it was absolutely shocking) it spurred us into action to writing our letter.
First of all,as you know, we had been through really tough times with ***** for a very long time and we were beginning to fear for his future.
When he came to New Directions, we really had our fingers crossed.
What can we say, you are amazing, the care & compassion shown by you and your staff in your homes is something we couldn’t imagined in our wildest dreams.
The manager is just like a “mum” to those in her care at Bishops *** and her staff are so thoughtful and caring.
You have all made such a huge difference to our lives.
Thank you so very much.
Signed Parents and family.

In conversation with a QCF assessor from Sussex Coast collage who gave permission to put this in this section: ” I come to your home to train staff in Health & Social Care and am always made to feel welcome. The staff at the home receive good training from New Directions and this is reflected in their work submitted for the Qualification Credit Framework.”
